What to do this lent?

In Christian calendar, the start of the Lenten season usually falls on a February, and Easter Sunday, is normally celebrated between March 22 to April 25.
Traditionally, Christians prepare for the Holy week by fasting, praying and renouncing life's pleasures, a gesture showing sympathy and value to the sacrifices Jesus Christ has endured on the cross.
Meanwhile, some Anglicans and Protestants believe that observing Lenten tradition is a choice and not an obligation. Thus, a person can choose what food or hobby they are willing to sacrifice during that season, and not subscribe with the traditional fasting and sacrificial acts.
But whether you are a believer of the conventional or the contemporary, here are some ideas on how to make your Lenten Season meaningful:
1. Choose what are the things, food or activities you are willing to sacrifice
Remember that this is the time to reflect on the sacrifice that Jesus made to save us from sins. If you really love to eat chocolates, junk foods or you smoke excessively, you may opt to refrain from these and give to the poor instead. The money you will be saving from not buying these 'cravings' are better given as help to the less fortunate; or you may find yourself donating it to the church.
2. Spend some time to talk to God
So you've been so busy with your work and school? Now is the perfect time to talk to Him. A simple quiet long walk will do for you to have a solemn conversation with God.
3. Lessen the use of gadgets and toys
Remember Lenten season is a moment for reflection and solitude, so avoid using or doing things that can cause you stress, agitation or distraction. You may use these if you only need to; if it is necessary. You may also use these gadgets to watch an inspirational movie, a lenten message from a priest or a pastor, or you may use your internet ready phones to download the Bible and read more of His word.
4. Avoid being irritated
This is the time for you to relax and stay calm. If stressful moments come, close your eyes and pray. This season is the perfect reminder for us to slow down and allow God to work on things. We have been working on everything too much already.
5. Engage into spiritually uplifting activities
All of us have been very pre-occupied with a lot of activities, engagements, appointments and gatherings for the past months. And this Lenten season is a perfect time to reconnect with your local church friends and elders. You will surely find refreshment and inspiration hearing and seeing them again. You may also consider attending your local church Lenten presentations, summer camps, retreats and the likes.
