Guillermo Rigondeaux defended his WBA bantamweight championship and added the WBO super bantamweight belt against Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire on Saturday night at the Radio Music Hall.
Rigondeaux improved to 12-0 as he ousted Nonito Donaire with the scores of 114-113, 115-112 and 116-111 in the unification bout. He failed to knock out an opponent for only the fourth time in his career.
"As I told you before, I would do my job and I did," Rigondeaux said through an interpreter. "I made him look bad. You can't win by landing one shot."
Rigondeaux's speed appeared too much for Donaire (31-2), who was trying to defend his super bantamweight belt for the fifth time. Donaire the Professional Boxer's Association fighter of the year was handed his first loss in 30 fights since 2001.
Donaire appeared to knock down Rigondeaux in the 10th round but the referee ruled it to only be a slip.
Rigondeaux dominated the opening rounds with a pair of left hands and catched Donaire off-guard with two more right hands, including one near the final bell.
