Sen. Imee Marcos is hoping to give those who are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic through their donations a break by pushing for tax exemptions.
In a press briefing on Wednesday, April 29, Marcos said that everyone donating to the COVID efforts right now are also affected by it. Their businesses have suffered but they're donating wholeheartedly.
" Kaya, imbes na pabigatin pa natin at papatawan pa natin ang buwis yung donasyon nila, pambihira naman, bigyan na lang natin ng konting palugit na wala namang buwis yung donation (So instead of giving them the additional burden of taxing their donations, let's give them a little leeway and make it tax-free)," said Marcos.
Senator Marcos said she wants the tax-free scheme to be a permanent, especially during times of crisis.
Marcos has filed Senate Bill 1429, which seeks to "cut out the red tape" of applying with the Department of Finance (DOF) for certificates of tax exemption on donations by institutionalizing "full tax benefits for donors."
In a statement last week, Marcos said, that scrapping the donor's tax and making the value of donations deductible from income tax will boost the country's efforts to save frontliners and more lives during calamities.
"This bill means to encourage the bayanihan spirit inherent in us Filipinos and not burden our generosity with taxes," said Marcos.
Under the bill, donations made during a government-declared state of calamity and are retroactive to January 2020 when the COVID-19 crisis was beginning to spread worldwide. (FCSC)
