President Benigno S. Aquino III has declared that the third Monday of every June will be observed as National Tour Guides' Day or Proclamation No. 574 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa Jr., May 7.
The declaration is in recognition of the contribution of the tourist guides' sector in the development, promotion and sustainability of tourism in the Philippines.
PNoy noted the importance of tourism in terms of socio-economic growth and cultural affirmation as it is an indispensable element of the national economy and an industry of national interest and importance. He noted that in line with this ideal is the Republic Act No. 9593 or the Tourism Act of 2009.
He added that the National Tour Guides' Day is an opportunity for professional tour guides to convene and conduct activities that will promote and advance their profession, and for authorities, the public and the media to appreciate the quality and value of their work.
It is dedicated to tourist guides who play a significant role in tourism in the promotion, marketing and advocacy of the Philippines as a tourism destination, creation of a favorable image of the country, and contribution to an enriching Philippine experience for local and foreign visitors.
