In celebration of the 115th anniversary of Philippine Independence, the post office building in Manila's Liwasang Bonifacio will be the backdrop for the flag raising ceremony on Wednesday, June 12, 2013.
His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III will lead the flag raising ceremony together with other key officials of the government, including Postmaster General and CEO Josie Dela Cruz and Chairman Cesar N. Sarino.
President Aquino will also lead the wreath laying ceremony at the Liwasang Bonifacio monument located across the post office building.
According to the Philippine Postal Corporation (PhlPost), President Emilio Aguinaldo ordered the establishment of a postal service in 1898 to provide delivery to Filipinos.
The grand Manila Central Post Office Building fronting the monument of Gat Andres Bonifacio has been a premier historical landmark which was completed in 1926. It was destroyed during World War II but was rebuilt after World War II in 1946.
In Philippine history, the Post Office building is considered one of the grandest and most dominating landmarks in Metro Manila.
It is a Neo-Classical Style building designed by an American and two Filipino architects namely Ralph Doane, Tomas Mapua and Juan Marcos de Guzman Arellano.
The Philippine postal system has a history spanning over 250 years. The first post office was established in the city of Manila in 1767. (PNA)
