The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) released on Friday additional list of priority courses that addresses the gap between the skills of graduates and the available jobs in the market.
The identified priority courses include natural sciences (biology, chemistry, marine biology, applied physics, geology, earth science), psychology, mathematics (applied mathematics, statistics or applied statistics), accountancy and social work.
In 2011, CHED identified priority courses namely agriculture and its related fields, science and math, engineering, arts and humanities, atmospheric science, environmental science, IT, teacher education, and health sciences as fields of study that will contribute to national development and address certain critical manpower shortages.
"Certain specializations in IT, health sciences and teacher education were also identified to respond to strong industry demand," CHED said in a statement.
The specializations include computing studies, multimedia, animation, programming, computer science, and information system management for IT; pharmacy, radiology technology and medical technology for health sciences and majors in mathematics, English, reading, special education, and sciences for teacher education.
"The list is based on national development plans, manpower demands for SY 2011-2015 and of the Department of Labor and Employment's Jobs Fit 2020," the agency said.
"The courses are prescribed until school year 2015-2016," it added. (PNA)
