The Philippine women's national football team (PWNFT) couldn't recover from Martha Thomas' brace in the first half to bow out of the gold medal race, 2-0, in the 2024 Pinatar Cup on Saturday, February 24, at the Pinatar Arena.
The defeat relegated the Filipinas to the bronze medal match against Slovenia on Tuesday, February 27, in the same venue after the latter lost to Finland.
Thomas, a striker for Tottenham Hotspur in England's topflight Women's Super League, scored the opening goal in the 23rd minute before scoring her second 13 minutes later, as the Scots went to the halftime break up by two-nil.
In the second half, Mark Torcaso's side came aggressively by putting pressure on the European squad with their pressing.
Though successful in neutralizing the composed Scotland eleven, the Filipinas failed to find the back of the net despite their efforts to score the breakthrough as Sarina Bolden and Katara Norman's attempts went to naught.
The score stood still until the final whistle.
Torcaso and his company played without Hali Long. They also missed the service of Meryll Serrano for the rest of the match after receiving a hard foul from Sam Kerr past the 50-minute mark.
Before their stint in the Pinatar 2024 tilt, the nationals absorbed a 4-0 blowout to Finland.
