MANILA – Akari's American Oluoma "Oly" Okaro impressed in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference and was named Press Corps Player of the Week for the July 23 to 27 period.
The 6-foot-1 opposite hitter scored 38 points in leading the Chargers to an 18-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13 victory over the Choco Mucho Flying Titans on July 23.
Her performance duplicated the league's fifth-highest single-game scoring output set by Creamline's Tots Carlos in the All-Filipino Conference in March.
Okaro also finished with 31 points when Akari stunned two-time defending champion Petro Gazz, 23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 29-27, 16-14, on July 27.
She had 16 points in Akari's 25-18, 27-25, 22-25, 25-14 win over Capital1 last July 18.
She beat Cignal's MJ Perez, Capital1's Marina Tushova, and Choco Mucho's Royse Tubino for the honors given by online, broadsheet and tabloid reporters covering the professional volleyball league.
PVL is streamed live and on-demand via the Pilipinas Live App and www.pvl.ph, respectively.
The Chargers, the Pool B leader, will battle winless ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles on Tuesday.
"This Akari team has a very strong and passionate fighting attitude. Even though we're down, collectively, we come together. We know that we don't want to lose this game, at least not go down without a fight," Okaro said. "I don't feel so much pressure thinking that I have to create alone." (PNA)
