UST Tigresses triumph in V-League Collegiate Challenge opener

MANILA – University of Santo Tomas (UST) beat Lyceum of the Philippines University, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-17, to open its 2024 V-League Collegiate Challenge women's division bid at Paco Arena in Manila on Sunday.
Angeline Poyos finished with 16 attacks and 13 excellent receptions while Jonna Perdido added 14 attacks and two blocks for the Golden Tigresses.
Regine Grace Jurado chipped in 13 points, including four aces, and Mary Margaret Banagua had eight points, two on blocks.
"Almost all rookies played today, but whatever the result, we just want to see how they will react for different scenarios, their adjustment and judgment because skills-wise, it's there," UST coach Kungfu Reyes said after the two-hour match.
UST dominated the first set early, leading 16-10.
The Golden Tigresses, however, committed several mistakes that allowed the Lady Pirates to take the second set after 31 minutes.
"There were lapses but there are more who can adapt to the system. What we need is consistency in movement, that is the intention," Reyes said.
Johna Denise Dolorito led Lyceum with 15 points on 12 attacks and three blocks.
Janeth Tulang contributed 11 points, including four blocks, while Heart Bio had seven attacks and three blocks.
UST's next game will be against University of the East on Aug. 4, while LPU will face University of the Philippines on Aug. 7. (PNA)
