LTO summons driver for blocking bike lane in viral video

MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Tuesday summoned the driver of a sedan that blocked a bike lane, caught on video that went viral on social media.
In a statement, LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said an investigation is ongoing to find out whether the driver and the registered owner of the vehicle in the video are one and the same person.
In a video posted on Facebook last week, a cyclist confronted the driver of the sedan.
The driver responded aggressively and dared the cyclist to keep recording his violation.
The driver didn't budge while the cyclist left and ended the confrontation.
"Ito po ay pambabastos sa ating mga kasamahan sa bicycle rider community at nagpapakita ng kawalan ng disiplina. 'Yung paninidigan mo pa ang maling gawain ay talagang abusado na 'yun (This is disrespectful to the cycling community and shows lack of discipline. Refusing to back down when you are wrong was arrogant behavior)," Mendoza said.
According to the show cause order signed by LTO-Intelligence and Investigation Division head Renante Militante, the vehicle with license plate DAM 3820 obstructed the passage of cyclists.
"In connection thereto, you and the involved driver are directed to appear at the Intelligence and Investigation Division, Land Transportation Office, East Avenue, Quezon City, on 26 August 2024 at 1:00 P.M.," the SCO read.
The registered owner was asked to submit a comment or explanation as to why he should not be administratively charged in connection with the incident.
"Failure to appear and submit the written comment/explanation as required shall be construed by this office as a waiver of your right to be heard, and the case shall be decided based on the evidence at hand," it said. (PNA)
