A 33-year-old homeless man in Amsterdam found a wallet with approximately 2,000 euros ($2,100) on an empty train and honestly handed the wallet to the police.
As a return for his honesty, the police gave him a voucher amounting to 50 euros. "Because we think that honesty should pay, he got a 'silver thumb' prize that we sometimes give to citizens and a gift voucher worth 50 euros," authorities added.
Also, authorities said that if the surrendered money is not claimed within one year, it will automatically go to the finder.
Hadjer Al-Ali has been homeless for 18 months. Still, his life is about to change after surrendering a wallet he found to the police while looking for empty plastic bottles to exchange for money.
People who saw Hadher's story made a funding site named "support for the honest Hadjer" and it has raised 34,102 euros ($36,450) in just a day.
"I want to thank everyone so, so, so much…I can't describe how I'm feeling at the moment…I've been inundated by people saying the sweetest, nicest, things," Hadjer said in a post on social media.
"I can't find the words, I don't know what to say, I'm full of adrenaline," he added.
