Golden Tigresses, Lady Tams prevail in V-League

MANILA – University of Santo Tomas banked on Angeline Poyos to beat College of St. Benilde, 25-16, 19-25, 14-25, 25-22, 15-12, in the V-League Women's Collegiate Challenge at the Paco Arena in Manila on Sunday.
Poyos delivered 22 points on 18 attacks, three blocks and an ace, and made 10 excellent digs and six receptions as the Golden Tigresses rolled to their fourth win.
Jonna Chris Perdido and Regine Grace Jurado chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively.
"It's good that we were able to recover. That's what we told the players earlier, control what we need to control, have composure in times when the momentum is not with us. We overcame it," UST head coach Kungfu Reyes said after the two-hour and 12-minute match.
Wielyn Estoque made 31 points on 26 attacks, three blocks and two aces for the Lady Blazers, who absorbed their third loss against two wins.
In the other game, Far Eastern University downed Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 25-16, 25-22, 25-15, to gain a share of second place with the University of the Philippines at 3-2.
Faida Bakanke led the Lady Tams with 18 points, while Chenie Tagaod and Jean Asis contributed six points each. Verenicce Colendra scored 12 points for the Lady Knights, who joined the University of the East Lady Warriors in fourth place at 1-2.
In the men's division, FEU snapped De La Salle University's four-game streak with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 win.
Lirick John Mendoza and Dryx Saavedra scored 11 and 10 points, respectively for the Tamaraws.
"We got ready for the La Salle game, the players really tried to win today," said FEU head coach Ed Orcullo.
Joshua Magalaman led the Green Archers with nine points, including five blocks, while Eugene Gloria and Glen Rui Ventura added eight points each. (PNA)
