Arellano stuns San Beda to secure second NCAA victory

MANILA – Arellano University pulled off a 72-70 victory over reigning champion San Beda University, 72-70, to boost its semifinal bid in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 100 men's basketball at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Saturday.
Lorenz Capulong had 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal as the Chiefs tied the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags at 2-5.
Jaedan Ongotan also made 13 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and two steals for Arellano, which also beat San Beda in the second round last season.
Ernest Geronimo chipped in 12 points, four rebounds and three assists while Renzo Abiera and Greg Borromeo added nine and seven points, respectively, for the Chiefs.
"We have a goal that even if we are at the bottom, they committed to fight the defending champion," Chico Manabat said in an interview after the match.
Jomel Puno scored a career-high 20 points, highlighted by four triples, for San Beda, which fell to 3-3.
RC Calimag contributed 14 points, while Bryan Sajonia and skipper Yulkien Andrada scored nine points each for the Red Lions, who led 24-19 at the end of the first quarter.
Andrada, who had six rebounds, one assist and one block, delivered a three-pointer to make it 70-72 in the dying seconds. (PNA)
