MANILA – College of Saint Benilde defeated San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20, to secure the last ticket to the next round in the 2024 Shakey's Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-Season Championship at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila on Friday.
Opposite hitter Clydel Catarig scored six points in the third set while wing spiker Wielyn Estoque added five as the Lady Blazers fended off the Lady Stags' attempt to extend the match.
Estoque delivered 11 attacks, one block and one ace for the three-time NCAA champion CSB, which ended the first round with a 2-1 record in Pool D.
Catarig chipped in nine points while Cristy Ondangan and Rhea Mae Densing had seven and six points, respectively.
"That's what I'm expecting from them. We're teaching them right and composure is a part of it. We've been competing in SSL and other leagues for so long, I can see their maturity, they are improving and they listen," CSB coach Jerry Yee said after the one hour and 21-minute match.
Opposite Christina Marasigan scored nine points while wing spiker Katherine Santos and middle blocker Juna May Gonzales scored seven and six points, respectively, for winless San Sebastian.
CSB will face University of the East in Pool E on Sunday at the start of the second round-robin phase.
The other match will pit National University against De La Salle University.
Comprising Pool F are University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila University, Far Eastern University and University of the Philippines. (PNA)
