MANILA – Rupert Zaragosa was crowned champion of the ICTSI Negros Occidental Classic, which was affected by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (Trami).
The third and final round was canceled after heavy downpour overnight made the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Bacolod City unplayable on Friday, according to a news release.
The tournament ended after 36 holes, with Zaragosa's second-round 66 giving him a six-stroke win over veteran Tony Lascuña and Reymon Jaraula.
He finished with a total six-under 134.
"I'm super happy with the outcome, despite the shortened tournament. It would've been nice to finish the full 72 holes, but considering how unplayable the course became, I understand the decision. I was ready to compete in the final 18, but I'm just as thrilled to win this way," Zaragosa said in Filipino after the awarding ceremony.
Zaragosa, who claimed his second career Philippine Golf Tour title, earned P450,000. He dedicated his victory to his grandfather who is in the hospital
He is set to join the ICTSI Match Play Championship at The Country Club in Laguna next month.
"It's been a challenging year for me. My game didn't start off well, but I'm grateful I was able to finish strong and secure this win," Zaragosa said.
Lascuña and Jaraula tied for second at 140 and got P232,500 each.
Lascuña, winner of the Splendido Taal leg last July, shot a 70, while Jaraula, who ruled the Binitin leg in Murcia last week, carded a 72.
Six players tied for fourth place at 141 – Collin Wheeler (70), Keanu Jahns (70), Russell Bautista (72), Sean Ramos (72), Francis Morilla (73), and first-round leader Michael Bibat (75).
They received P91,250 each. (PNA)
