MARINA boosts data privacy practices

MANILA – The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is looking to improve its data privacy practices towards industry standards following a five-day workshop on Republic Act 10173 or the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (DPA).

In a statement on Monday, MARINA Management Information Systems Service (MISS) Director Dr. Joseph Victor Generato said the workshop would yield "positive results" as it served as the beginning of MARINA's "ongoing journey toward full and sustained compliance."

"The DPA has transformed our approach to managing information. It is up to us to ensure that these changes result in a safer and more privacy-conscious MARINA," Generato said.

The workshop, he said, is an essential step in MARINA's ongoing efforts to meet global privacy standards, mitigate data risks, and foster a culture of responsibility within the organization.

"Through the program, MARINA aims to build public trust, enhance operational efficiency, and ensure that data privacy remains one of its top priorities," he said.

The five-day workshop from Oct. 21 to 25 was designed to familiarize key MARINA personnel with the complexity and importance of data privacy. (PNA)
