Deaths from twin cyclones climb to 139: NDRRMC

MANILA – The death toll for the combined effects of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name Trami) and Super Typhoon Leon (international name Kong-rey) has climbed to 139, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday.
Of the 139 reported deaths, only 14 has been so far validated – with nine in Bicol, two in Central Luzon, two in Cordillera and one in Northern Mindanao, according to the disaster response body's latest situation report.
The remaining 125 deaths are still undergoing validation – 72 in Calabarzon, 46 in Bicol Region, five in Central Visayas and two in Zamboanga Peninsula.
Still undergoing confirmation are reports of 21 persons missing – 15 in Calabarzon, four in Bicol, one in Ilocos and one in Central Visayas.
Of the 86 reported injured persons, only 10 are verified as of this time, the NDRRMC added.
Affected families are placed at 1,788,630 which is equivalent to 7,033,922 persons residing in 10,948 barangays in 17 regions nationwide.
Of these, 86,565 families or 333,951 persons are sheltered in 2,780 evacuation centers while another 91,307 families or 427,059 individuals are being aided outside.
Around 111,117 houses were also reported damaged in 16 regions.
The damage to agriculture and infrastructure was placed at P2.83 billion and P3.61 billion, respectively. (PNA)
