SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – The Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division of Antique has approved the request of the schools in the island Municipality of Caluya for them to form another cluster for their representation at the Antique Provincial Athletic Association Meet (APAAM) set from Dec. 4-8.
Dr. Oliver Servillon, DepED Antique sports coordinator, said in an interview Friday that during their meeting with DepEd Schools Division of Antique Supt. Nicasio Frio last Oct. 30, the request of the schools to form Cluster 5 for the APAAM had been approved.
"Athletes from Caluya have difficulty joining the practice of other athletes from other towns considering the geography of their municipality, being an island with islet barangays," Servillon explained.
He said the 20 public schools in Caluya with about 560 technical officials and athletes previously joined Cluster 4 together with the delegates from the towns of Tibiao, Culasi, Sebaste, and Libertad located in the mainland of Antique province.
He noted that athletes from Caluya were only able to join the Cluster 4 athletic teams during the final day of the APAAM because of the difficulty of transportation through a ferry boat from their island municipality to the port in Libertad town.
"With the Caluya athletes forming their own cluster, they would now be able to have more time to practice for the APAAM," he said.
Servillon said Caluya has signified interest in joining all the 23 events that will be held at the Binirayan Sports Complex in San Jose de Buenavista and in other identified playing fields such as in the University of Antique in Sibalom.
"We are looking forward to a more exciting and stiff competition with Caluya coming strong in baseball and swimming," he said. (PNA)
