MANILA – University of Santo Tomas pair Sofiah Pagara and Khylem Progella scored a 2-0 win at the start of the UAAP Season 87 collegiate beach volleyball tournament at the Sands SM By The Bay on Friday.
Progella and Pagara, last season's top rookie, clobbered Far Eastern University's Lovely Lopez and Melody Pons, 21-16, 21-14, before hacking out a 21-17, 21-13 victory over Ateneo's Liz Lomocso and Grydelle Matibag.
Progella and Pagara saw action at the recent Asian Senior Beach Volleyball Championship in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
National University's Honey Grace Cordero and Kat Epa also won their opening-day matches. They conquered University of the Philippines tandem Euri Eslapor and Julia De Leon, 21-16, 21-14, in the morning session, and later pulled off a 21-17, 21-18 win over Adamson University rookies Shai Nitura and Fei Sagaysay.
In other matches, University of the East's Van Bangayan and Krisha Revilla rallied past Ateneo's Lomocso and Matibag, 21-18, 15-21, 15-11, while Adamson's Nitura and Sagaysay downed La Salle's Sophia Sindayen and Ela Raagas, 21-6, 21-18.
Action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with six matches. (PNA)
