UP's Niñura claims 2nd gold medal in UAAP athletics

MANILA – University of the Philippines runner Mea Gey Niñura ruled the women's 5,000 meters event Monday to secure her second gold medal in the UAAP Season 87 athletics tournament at the New Clark City Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
She clocked 18:47.33 to beat teammate and national triathlete Erika Burgos (18:54.90) and National University's Jessa Mae Roda (19:14.50).
"This is my last season, I'm done studying. I just want to give back to University of the Philippines, because of the university, I graduated," said Niñura, who earned a degree in Physical Education.
Also topping their respective events were University of Santo Tomas bet Lanie Carpintero and Far Eastern University's Rica Mae Balderama.
Carpintero bagged the women's javelin throw gold medal in 47.36 meters, prevailing over De La Salle University's Ann Katherine Quitoy (40.19m) and Adamson University's Elizabeth Sicat (37.87m).
Balderama registered 12.52 meters to claim victory in the women's triple jump.
UST's Jeanne Arnibal (12.47m) and La Salle's Abcd Agamanos (12.26m) finished for second and third, respectively.
UST secured three gold medals courtesy of Azeneth Serat in the women's 5,000m walk, Joana Marie Bandal in the women's hammer throw and Khrizzie Ruzol in the women's pole vault.
Serat clocked 27:36.57 to conquer UP's Juliana Talaro (28:15.64) and Mary Julianne Bayola (28:40.00).
Bandal posted 42.05 meters to take the gold medal. NU's Jane Cambonga (39.62m) got the silver while UST's Rashied Faith Burdeos (39.57m) settled for the bronze.
Ruzol cleared the bar in 3.25m, beating University of the East's Beatriz Pelaez (2.75m) and UP's Isabelle Sta. Maria (2.40m).
In the men's division, UE's James Darrel Orduña retained the 10,000m title with a time of 32:10.81. FEU's Rogen Aguirre (33:07.02) placed second followed by UP's Roy Laudit (33:54.22).
Other winners were UST's Johnpaul Araneta (100m), UP's Ed Deliña (shot put) and Ateneo's Hassan Loraña (800m).
In the girls division, UE grabbed the gold medals in the shot put (Louise Victoria) and 800m (Jeralyn Rodriguez), while Adamson University ruled the high jump (Marjorie Raguidos).
Winners in the boy's division were UST's Godfrey Monzon (hammer throw), Aaron Prince Angles (triple jump), and Vincent Durana (5,000m walk). (PNA)
