South Korea's President has declared martial law.
This is after President Yoon Suk Yeol accused the opposition of being "anti-state forces." He further added that he acted to protect the North's growing threats.
The announcement sent shockwaves across the globe Tuesday. The White House did not immediately comment on the latest news. The Korean won went down against the US dollar.
The last time South Korea was under martial law was in 1980.
On the other hand, South Korean lawmakers voted 190 out of 300 against the decree. Woo Won-sik, the chairman of the National assembly labeled the announcement "invalid."
