87k residents surrounding Kanlaon evacuates

The office of Civil Defense (OCD) has announced for the urgent evacuation of about 87,000 residents surrounding Mt. Kanlaon Monday.

This was after the explosive eruption of the volcano in Negros island. Kanlaon straddles between Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental in the Visayas region.

Defense Secretary and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) chairperson Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has ordered the Inter-agency Coordinating Cell (IACC) to coordinate response efforts, emphasizing the need for in-person duty from member agencies at the NDRRMC Operations Center.

Much of the affected areas is around La Castellana where about 47,000 individuals are within the 6-kilometer danger zone.

Authorities also need to focus in Barangay Sag-ang due to the westward wind directions.

On one hand, the province of Guimaras is also affected by ashfall.
