Two people were killed and four others injured after a black SUV rammed into pedestrians near the departure entrance of NAIA Terminal 1 on Sunday morning. The crash occurred around 8:55 a.m. when the SUV crashed through a barrier and struck the walkway outside the terminal.
The Department of Transportation confirmed that the victims who lost their lives were a 29-year-old man and a five-year-old child. The four injured individuals were quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The driver, identified as Leo Gonzales, 47, is currently in police custody. The Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group reported that the Ford Everest had just dropped off a passenger and was preparing to leave when the incident happened.
In response, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued a 90-day preventive suspension on Gonzales' driver's license, as announced by LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said initial findings suggest the crash was unintentional but emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and urged the public to avoid speculation.
NAIA officials said the injured are being treated and confirmed that the driver remains in custody. NNIC president Ramon S. Ang pledged to shoulder medical expenses and assist the families of the two fatalities. "This is a very tragic incident. Our priority now is to make sure the victims and their families receive the support and care they need," Ang said.
