The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has confirmed the first recorded case of the H5N9 bird flu strain in the Philippines.
The virus was detected in duck samples from Camaligan, Camarines Sur, during routine testing conducted on April 30, 2025, by the Department of Agriculture's Regional Field Office V.
H5N9 spreads easily among birds, but BAI reassured the public that it poses minimal risk to humans unless there is prolonged and close contact.
To control the spread, BAI quickly quarantined the affected area, culled infected birds, and increased surveillance within 1 km and 7 km zones. The Department of Health and local government units are also involved in the response efforts.
The bureau stated, 'Rest assured that BAI is committed to safeguarding the Philippines' poultry industry from the threat of avian influenza and will continue close cooperation with other government agencies and stakeholders.'
BAI also advised farmers to follow biosecurity and hygiene protocols and urged the public to report any unusual poultry deaths. This marks the first time H5N9 has been identified in the country.
