Vice President Sara Duterte has expressed her support for a proposed law banning political dynasties in the Philippines, despite coming from a well-known political family.
Speaking to the media after voting in the 2025 midterm elections, Duterte said, "Ako yung may pinakamalaki at solid ang kredibilidad to speak about political dynasty because I come from a political dynasty, so wala nang mas matindi pang expert sa political dynasty."
She emphasized her stance, saying, "I am campaigning against making it automatic for candidates to be voted to a political position on account of being a brother or sister, a spouse, a nephew or a niece."
"Whether or not one is a Duterte, a Marcos, does not mean automatic vote," she said. "The next question is if I am against political dynasty," she continued. "Yes, I am in favor of a law against political dynasty. We don't have to go far to seek some dynasties because I belong to a political dynasty," she admitted.
Her statements come as the Duterte family continues to strengthen its political grip in Davao. Former President Rodrigo Duterte, currently detained in The Hague, won the mayoral race in Davao City. His son, Sebastian, was elected vice mayor, while Paolo Duterte retained his congressional seat. Two of Duterte's grandsons also secured local positions, and five family-backed candidates are currently leading in the Senate race.
Despite her family's strong presence in politics, Duterte called on voters to evaluate candidates based on merit rather than family name. She also expressed willingness to help draft the proposed anti-dynasty law, signaling her commitment to political reform.
