According to Senate President Chiz Escudero, the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte will likely not be finished during the 19th Congress due to limited time until June 30, 2025.
If the House passes the articles of impeachment by June 2, the Senate will start the impeachment court on June 3, where senators will take their oath as judges. The actual trial is expected to begin on July 30, one day after the opening of the 20th Congress.
Escudero explained, "Pwedeng pagbotohan ng 19th Congress ang impeachment, pero hindi ito obligado na sundin ng 20th Congress. Maaaring magbago ang desisyon depende sa mga bagong senador."
This means the course of the case could change once the new Congress begins.
Meanwhile, VP Duterte has filed a petition with the Supreme Court to dismiss the case, citing political motives and procedural issues. She is accused of violating the Constitution, intimidating political opponents, corruption, and unexplained wealth.
The Senate will decide whether she will remain in office or be barred from holding any public position.
