The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) announced on Friday, July 4, 2025, that it is open to adopting stricter regulations on online gambling.
The rise of online gambling, made easier by e-wallets and apps, has led to addiction, financial strain, and mental health issues, pushing for stricter rules in the Philippines. "It is the prerogative of our lawmakers to propose laws they believe will serve the public's best interest," the agency stated, following the filing of a Senate bill that seeks to impose tighter controls on online gambling operations.
The bill, introduced by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, also includes a provision to ban the use of e-wallets for online gambling transactions.
PAGCOR reaffirmed its strong commitment to collaborating with government agencies and organizations in ramping up efforts to combat the spread of illegal online gambling.
In a press briefing last month, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro revealed that the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) had already shut down 7,000 unauthorized online gaming sites identified by PAGCOR.
Castro reiterated the government's firm position against unregulated online gambling and urged the public to avoid engaging with or promoting illegal platforms.
