Several lawmakers have come to the defense of the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, asserting that it is a constitutional process aimed at promoting truth and accountability, rather than a politically motivated "witch hunt."
The statement came in response to Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri's earlier comments suggesting that the case lacks merit and is driven by political agendas.
ACT Teachers Party-list Representative Antonio Tinio criticized the use of the term "witch hunt," stating that it trivializes the gravity of the constitutional process. "Calling it a witch hunt implies the case has no value," Tinio said. "Such a view should not come from a senator expected to be an impartial judge," he added.
Echoing the same sentiment, Iloilo 3rd District Representative Lorenz Defensor emphasized that the impeachment complaint is based on strong evidence and a solid foundation. He noted that this is why the House of Representatives continues to pursue the proceedings.
Defensor also reminded senator-judges, including Zubiri, to uphold the integrity of the impeachment process and refrain from issuing premature statements or conclusions.
Lawmakers reiterated that impeachment is a legal and constitutional tool designed to ensure accountability from high-ranking officials. They called on the public and fellow legislators to respect the process and allow it to unfold without bias or political interference.
