President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C. from July 20 to 22, 2025 following an official invitation from the U.S. government.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo said the summit will tackle key issues such as trade, regional security, and military cooperation. A major point of discussion is the proposed 20% tariff on Philippine exports to the U.S., which is set to take effect on August 1.
"This is not just about trade – it's about strategic partnership," said international affairs analyst Ramon Casiple. "The timing is crucial, and the invitation signals a continued commitment from the U.S. to support the Philippines."
The meeting is seen as a diplomatic milestone, with Marcos being the first Southeast Asian leader personally invited by Trump since returning to office. Senator Marco Rubio earlier confirmed the meeting, which comes after a recent trilateral dialogue between the Philippines, U.S., and Japan in Malaysia.
