How to avoid boredom in meetings

As employees, we are often called to attend meetings. A common sight during these gatherings is boredom and a lack of interest among participants. So how can we avoid feeling disengaged during meetings? Here are a few practical suggestions:
1. Listen and take notes
Let's shift how we view meetings. Instead of judging them before they start, try to listen actively and take note of important information that could help in your work. People who immediately complain often begin with a negative mindset, causing them to miss out on valuable insights and learning opportunities.
2. Try to participate and share your ideas
Meetings become more engaging when you take part in the discussion. Share your thoughts on the topic at hand – it not only makes the meeting more dynamic but also helps you overcome shyness and build confidence. Set a goal to speak up two or three times, and make sure your contributions are thoughtful and relevant.
3. Volunteer to lead an ice breaker
If the meeting feels dull, consider volunteering to lead a quick ice breaker. It can lift everyone's mood, help the speaker feel more connected, and make the session more enjoyable for all.
4. Ask questions
In meetings led mostly by higher-ups, don't hesitate to ask questions when the time is right. If you're asked to wait until the speaker finishes, jot down your questions so you're ready when the floor is open.
5. Talk to your manager
If long and repetitive meetings are becoming a habit in your workplace, consider respectfully sharing your thoughts with your manager. Suggest ways to make meetings more concise and productive but do so carefully to show you still understand their importance.
Boredom in meetings is common, but it's not unavoidable. With a few adjustments such as active listening, participation, and thoughtful feedback, meetings can become more engaging and valuable. Sometimes, all it takes is a small change in attitude to make a big difference.
