Contrary to growing speculation, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte remains in its detention facility in The Hague.
ICC spokesperson Dr. Fadi El-Abdallah told the media on Thursday, "I can confirm that there is no change in the status of Mr. Duterte. He is still in the ICC detention center."
The clarification comes after unverified reports claimed Duterte had left his cell, casting doubt on his current status. Speculation intensified when his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, declined to respond to questions regarding the alleged release. The uncertainty further deepened when the ICC's Pre-Trial Chamber I previously granted Duterte's request to defer a decision on his appeal for interim release.
Duterte was arrested on March 11, 2025, on charges of crimes against humanity. His administration's controversial anti-drug campaign officially recorded more than 6,000 deaths. However, human rights groups estimate the true figure could be as high as 30,000, mostly involving low-level drug users and small-time dealers.
The formal confirmation of charges against Duterte is scheduled for September 23.
