Do you often wonder where your hard-earned salary went, like it just slipped through your fingers without you realizing it? You're not alone because many of us experience the same thing! But before it becomes a habit that's hard to break, let's talk about some simple budget tricks that can help us be more mindful of how we spend our money so we can truly enjoy our salary without the guilt.
1. Save at the start
Have you heard the saying "Pay yourself first"? This means that the moment you receive your salary, you should immediately set aside a portion for yourself. How much? You can start with a small percentage, for example 5%. So if you're earning P10,000 net, you should at least set aside P500 for yourself. You can gradually increase this amount as your income grows.
2. Have a fixed daily budget
We need to determine how much we actually need to budget each day. For example, for transportation and food, multiply that amount by five to ten days and add at least P500. Only put that total amount in your wallet. The extra P500 will serve as your emergency fund, which you should keep in a separate compartment of your wallet so you won't be tempted to spend it.
3. Set a disposable budget
After working all week, it's only natural to want some me-time on the weekend, dine out with family, or hang out with friends. You can set aside 5 to 10 percent of your net salary for these moments. But of course, make sure to stick to your budget.
4. Take advantage of carpooling or home-cooked meals
Don't be shy to accept offers. For example, if a coworker who lives along the same route offers you a ride home, or if your mom or dad packs you lunch, take it. You'll be surprised how much you can save and use for more important expenses or needs.
5. Stay away from subscriptions
Whether it's a phone or data plan, magazines, or a credit card, it's wise to hold off on getting these while you haven't been with your employer for at least a year. This time allows you to save first and build your creditworthiness.
6. Record every peso
It doesn't matter how you choose to do it, whether on your phone, in a notebook, or on a calendar. What's important is that you know where your money is going. This way, you'll be able to see if you're still on track with your spending and saving.
7. Open a savings account
Once you become a regular employee, aside from your payroll ATM account, it's a good idea to open another savings account. This will encourage you to make regular deposits and help prevent you from making online fund transfers for impulse purchases.
Managing your salary doesn't have to be overwhelming. With a few smart habits and conscious choices, you can make the most of your income and enjoy the rewards of your hard work. It's all about spending with intention, saving consistently, and making decisions that support your future. Start small, stay consistent, and you'll be surprised at how far your money can go.
