The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) said it will comply with whatever decision Congress makes regarding the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), whether they are postponed.
As of now, the 2025 BSKE is set for December 1, 2025. However, if the proposed bill is signed into law by President Bongbong Marcos, the elections will be rescheduled to the first Monday of November 2026.
Amid talks of postponement, COMELEC continues its preparations for the BSKE, including the procurement of supplies and ongoing voter registration. Chairman George Garcia confirmed that a formal signing ceremony is scheduled for August 12 at 2 p.m. in which President Marcos is expected to sign the bill. Garcia explained that the bill not only moves the election date but also aims to extend the term of Barangay and SK officials, saying, "Mukhang 'yon po talaga ang pakay ng Panukalang Batas, na i-fix na yung termino ng Barangay officials from three years gagawin nang four years, pero subject only to one re-election."
According to Garcia, they need to proceed with preparations since procurement and mass production can take up to two months, adding that readiness is essential no matter the final decision.
Voter registration for the BSKE began on August 1 and will continue until August 10, 2025.
