President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. welcomed San Miguel Corporation's President and CEO Ramon Ang's offer to help address Metro Manila flooding, highlighting the value of private sector support.
However, he stressed that the initiative would only be effective if LGUs tackled the garbage issue that blocks drainage systems and waterways. "It simply doesn't work until we have a solution to the garbage problem," Marcos said, pointing to Manila's waste-to-energy project proposal as a potential model for other cities.
"This is not anything new. The so-called taipans of the country pagka mayroon tayong gustong gawin, nag-o-offer talaga sila. Kaya marami silang naitutulong," he added.
Marcos said the government will carefully review the proposal, noting that Ang's proven record of delivering infrastructure projects on schedule adds weight to the offer.
At a separate press conference, Ang has offered to clean rivers and waterways for free to ease flooding in Metro Manila. He said that he only needs an approval from local government units and the MMDA to begin dredging and start the clearing operations.
