According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAIDS, HIV infections in the Philippines have increased sixfold from 2010 to 2024, making it one of the fastest-rising HIV epidemics in the Western Pacific Region.
The majority of new cases are recorded among young men who engage in male-to-male sexual activity, driven by late HIV diagnosis and limited access to treatment and prevention services.
Health officials warn that the situation may worsen if immediate and targeted action is not taken. WHO is urging the Philippine government to strengthen early testing, increase access to antiretroviral therapy, and expand prevention strategies such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). They also stress the need to address stigma and discrimination, which continue to discourage individuals from getting tested or treated.
Authorities emphasize the importance of strong political leadership and community-based initiatives to curb the epidemic and protect public health.
