President Ferdinand 'BongBong' Marcos Jr. has underscored the importance of securing strong evidence before filing cases against individuals allegedly involved in the flood control scam, warning that rushing the process could lead to acquittals on technical grounds.
Speaking at the Kapihan with the Media session, Marcos acknowledged public pressure to immediately arrest and prosecute those accused of corruption. However, he stressed that due process must be observed to ensure accountability.
"We have now shifted from the political realm to the legal one," the President said. "If we rush to file weak cases and they win because of technicalities, those who stole billions from the government could walk free. That would be a far worse outcome."
Marcos noted that all cases must follow proper procedures, including filing complaints with the Department of Justice or the Office of the Ombudsman and undergoing preliminary investigations to ensure airtight evidence before reaching the courts. He also cautioned against filing cases simply to appease public demand, as this could jeopardize the entire prosecution.
"We only get one chance at this. If the case collapses, we can't charge them again because of double jeopardy," the President explained. "It's better to do it right than to do it quickly."
Despite acknowledging that the process takes time, Marcos reaffirmed the government's commitment to holding accountable those who misused public funds and recovering stolen assets.
"The wheels of justice grind slowly, but they grind very well," he said, expressing confidence that careful preparation will ensure lasting results.
