The Quezon City Public Employment Service Office (QC-PESO) said Tuesday that around 350 students had availed of its program of Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) this summer.
According to Glenda E. Dalag, QC-PESO Employment Section assistant head, the SPES started last March and ended this May 7 which gave summer jobs for students for a period of two months.
"SPES is conducted every year by QC-PESO in partnership with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to enable students to earn during summer. About 60% of the minimum wage comes from QC while the 40% comes from DOLE," Dalag explained.
Dalag said that the students who were hired were employed in the city hall offices so that they will get familiar with public service involvement in the city's various projects and services.
She also added that others were employed also by McDonalds Company who gave the 60% of the minimum wage while DOLE shares 40%.
According to PESO, the project is all-out supported by QC mayor Herbert M. Bautista as part of his desire to help poor but deserving QC students to earn an income during summer to support their educational expenses in the coming school opening by June.
Under Republic Act No. 7323 it provides that poor but deserving students pursue their education by encouraging their employment during summer/Christmas vacation.
Aside from undertaking SPES, the QC-PESO also facilitates employment by accommodating QC residents applying for jobs by linking them through employers such as fast-food chains, malls, call centers and other offices and companies offering clerical jobs. (PNA)
