The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) led by PCSO Chairperson Junie E. Cua and PCSO Vice Chairperson and General Manager Melquiades A. Robles on Tuesday, August 2, turned over Five Hundred Thousand Pesos (P500,000.00) to track and field legend Lydia de Vega-Mercado who is in very critical condition due to complications brought about by Stage 4 Breast Cancer.
Former DLSU volleyball standout Stephanie "Paneng" Mercado-de Koenigswarter and daughter of the sprint queen received the assistance on her behalf. The amount given is from the discretionary fund of the PCSO Board of Directors.
The donated assistance will be used for the medical expenses of Ms. De Vega at the Makati Medical Center for her chemotherapy and other medical treatment.
Lydia is one of the most decorated athletes in our country and was dubbed the fastest woman in Asia in the 1980s. She also won two Asian Games gold medals and set a national record in 100m, clocking 11.28 seconds – that stood for 33 years. (PCSO)
