A photographer from Lithuania recently received a prize from an international photography competition after sending a close-up photo of an ant's face.
Eugenijus Kavaliauskas, a wildlife photographer, submitted an image of an ant's face magnified five times for the 2022 Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition that won him the "Images of Distinction" award and one Nikon item worth 35 dollars in retail.
This year's competition aims to celebrate the art of microscope photography showing photos with details that a normal human eye can't see.
Kavaliauskas's microscopic photo shows the ant's sharp, crimson eyes and fangs. He said it is easy for him to catch an ant since he lives near the forest. "But it's boring to take a photo of an ant, running banally, on the ground," Kavaliauskas said to Insider.
"I'm always looking for details, shadows, and unseen corners. The main goal of photography is to be a discoverer," Kavaliauskas added.
Meanwhile, the top honor for the photography competition went to Grigorii Timin and Michel Milinkovitch from the University of Geneva, who showed a photo gecko's front paw in fluorescent detail.
