The construction for the first-ever waste disposal facility or sanitary landfill in Baras town at Catanduanes already began.
Baras Mayor Paolo Teves said the 15 million pesos project was in its second phase.
However, Teves claimed the budget wasn't enough.
He shared that their municipality was planning to borrow 50 million pesos from a bank to accomplish the project, which includes constructing a containment facility; buying equipment, such as dump trucks, excavators, and composting machines; and hiring personnel.
The sanitary landfill can last up to 10 years if it will only serve Baras, yet Teves was open to the possibility of other Catanduanes municipalities disposing of their waste in the said facility.
"Open kami sa ideya, pero for now, kailangan muna naming pag-aralan." Teves said, as Baras collects 2,000 kilos or 40 metric tons of garbage monthly. (Rey Boton Jr./Radyo Natin Virac)
