A veteran farmer from Occidental Mindoro shared his experience in growing onions during the Onion Harvest Festival held in Barangay Murtha at San Jose municipality of the said province.
In an interview with local media, Tony Sanggalang said that he became successful in cultivating onions through his knowledge of the crop, which includes seed selection, period of watering, and emphasis on the importance of an onion storage facility.
Given his success, Sanggalang asked the government to help his fellow crop growers by building them onion storages in the municipality.
According to him, these storages can help farmers maximize their profit in onions.
Sanggalang added that onion farmers must not hesitate to ask him how to improve their agricultural product production.
Dubbed as "onion hero", Sanggalang has farmed onions for 21 years, which began in three cans in 2006 before owning five hectares of farmland.
Through onion farming, he sustained his children's education until they graduated and got the money to build a house for himself and the family. (Ricky Dela Cruz/Radyo Natin San Jose, Occidental Mindoro)
