Michele Gumabao had 20 points and Creamline smothered Cignal in straight sets, 25-20, 25-20, 25-16, to stay unbeaten in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Second All-Filipino Conference (AFC).
The former De La Salle University standout pounded 19 attacks and a block for the Cool Smashers to capture their second win in as many games in the season-ending conference at the Batangas City Sports Center on Saturday, October 21.
Tots Carlos added 10 markers on eight kills, a block, and an ace, while Jeanette Panaga contributed seven for the defending back-to-back AFC titlist to join Chery Tiggo Crossovers and Petro Gazz Angels on top of the team standings with a 2-0 win-loss record.
The three-set victory came days after the CCS management announced their parting with middle blocker Celine Domingo, who requested to play overseas.
Domingo is the second Creamline player to leave the club for a stint abroad. Last September, Denso Airybees signed setter Jia Morado-De Guzman for the upcoming V. League season in Japan.
In addition to their departure, the Cool Smashers missed the service of libero Kyla Atienza for the second consecutive match due to injury.
Ella de Jesus started in her part. She collected 10 excellent digs against Cignal.
Despite these developments, Creamline proved its depth and strength in numbers after taking down two contenders in a row.
First, the Choco Mucho Flying Titans that the Cool Smashers outclassed on the opening day.
Now, the HD Spikers team.
Coming off a triumph over PLDT High Speed Hitters, Cignal made work easier for Creamline after giving 29 free points from their errors.
That amount of mistakes spelled the difference for both sides that went neck-to-neck in other scoring departments, with CCS – committed 15 errors – notching the spikes (39-35) and aces (3-2) as the HD Spikers drew level in blocks (4-4).
The Cool Smashers took advantage and never faltered to decimate the MVP-backed Cignal, especially in the third and final set.
Team captain Ces Molina, the HD Spikers' Best Player of the Game against PLDT, paced her wards anew in a losing effort.
Molina uncorked 17 points built on 15 hits and two blocks but got limited support from her teammates.
Vani Gandler and Jovelyn Gonzaga listed six markers apiece for the HD Spikers – slid to 1-1.

In the first game, the Angels eased past Gerflor Defenders via a 25-11, 25-4, 25-23 rout for a perfect 2-0 mark.
Nicole Tiamzon chipped in six attacks and two aces for eight points, while Marian Buitre scored eight as well on six kills and two blocks for Petro Gazz to dominate Gerflor, particularly in a record-setting second set.
Eight other players tallied at least three points for the Angels that held the Defenders to just four points in the second frame – the second lowest in league history after Creamline limited BaliPure to three during the 2021 PVL Bubble in Ilocos Norte.
Gerflor put up a fight in the third, battling back from a couple of six-point deficits with the last at 17-11.
The Defenders took the driver's seat, 23-22, as Buitre's crosscourt attack seemingly went wide without touch, but the Angels challenged and won to reverse the call.
Tiamzon delivered the last two attack points with a Buitre service error in between to seal the deal for the Timmy Sto. Tomas-mentored squad.
Led by Mary Grace Berte's six and Menchie Tubiera's five, Gerflor fell to an identical 0-2 slate as the Farm Fresh Foxies in the 12-team tournament.
