Pres. Duterte skipped APEC gala dinner due to 'jet lag'

MANILA — President Rodrigo R. Duterte said on Monday he missed the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' photo shoot and gala dinner in Lima, Peru because of jet lag.
Speaking before members of the Philippine media during a press conference in Peru, the President said he decided to skip the event because he felt "light-headed" due to drowsiness.
"Jet lag. I feel light-headed because exactly at that time, it is my sleeping time back home in the Philippines," President Duterte said.
The time difference between the Philippines and Peru is plus 13 hours (1:00 a.m. in Peru is 2:00 p.m. in the Philippines on the same calendar day).
President Duterte said that there were times during preceding events where he could not refrain from briefly closing his eyes while others were speaking.
He said he could not just bring himself to attend an event only to nod off while others were speaking.
"It is not good for the 'greats of the convention' to be speaking, tapos ako nakapikit ang mata. Sabi ko mag-uwi na lang ako. Talagang inaantok ako. Jet lag, simply," he said.
President Duterte, who turned 71 last March 28, is one of the oldest leaders to attend the APEC summit.
In comparison, outgoing United States President Barack Obama is only 55 years old; Russian President Vladimir Putin is 64; Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is 62; while Chinese President Xi Jinping is 63. (PNA)
