Last July 23, Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc., and Ashoka Philippines kicked off Day 1 of "Barangay Resilience Exchange (Rx)," an online event on community-driven innovation for resilience in time for National Disaster Resilience Month. It was attended by more than 300 barangay & local government unit leaders and their supporters from private companies and non-governmental organizations.
Vice President Leni Robredo and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte delivered keynote addresses on building resilience on the national and local levels, respectively.
The other featured speakers were Jean-Henri Lhuillier, President & CEO of Cebuana Lhuillier and Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation, Inc.; Abi Mapua, Country Director of Ashoka Philippines; Ashoka Fellow Kevin Lee, Founder of A Single Drop for Safe Water and project manager of the Barangay Resilience and Innovation Through Empowerment (BRITE) program; and infectious disease specialist Dr. Bryan Albert Lim. They challenged the notion of "Filipino resilience," gave suggestions on what we need to make this perception a reality, and shared how communities across the country are responding to current emergencies.
Base Bahay and BRITE also shared their innovative solutions in the Project Exchange segment. Maricen Jalandoni, the President and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for Base Bahay, presented how the organization's unique cement bamboo frame technology is providing affordable and sturdy housing to communities, as well as providing them with livelihood opportunities. Barangay officials from Puerto Princesa discussed how the BRITE program helped them clearly identify grassroots problems and design more effective solutions.
