"Happiness is a choice and not a result of achievements or purchases argues," says Calvin Holbrook.
Being happy means that you are experiencing positive emotions such as joy, contentment and satisfaction. In fact, several studies done by researchers and experts showed that happiness can bring benefits to our overall health.
Here are the following health benefits of happiness according to healthline.com:
1. It can strengthen our immune system
Being happy or having positive emotions can help in keeping your immune system strong, according to a study posted in pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.
In a 2003 experiment posted in pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, 350 adult participants were exposed to the common cold (they were well-compensated) to determine the relations of moods and immune response. Before the start of the experiment, the participants were called by the researchers six times in two weeks to check if they experienced positive feelings such as pleasure, happiness and calm within that day.
After five days of quarantine, those who have positive emotions were less likely to get a cold compared to those who did not.
2. It can fight off our stress
Happiness can lessen the stress hormones called cortisol that we have in our body and it can also help us recover more quickly.
Having too much stress levels in our body can develop weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.
In a study posted in ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, about 200 adult participants were placed in a stressful lab-based task, and researchers found that cortisol levels of persons who were happy were 32 percent lower compared to the unhappy participants.
3. It can help in reducing pain
Having positive emotions such as happiness and hopefulness can help in reducing the pain you may experience which appears to be effective for persons who have chronic pain conditions such as arthritis.
Based on a study posted in ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, it showed that over 1,000 participants with painful arthritis of the knee have seen that happier people walked an extra 711 steps each day which is 8.5 percent more than those participants who are less happy.
This happens because happy people that are sick or in pain have positive emotions which help them in broadening their perspective and creating new thoughts and ideas.
4. It promotes a healthy lifestyle
A study showed that happy people tend to practice a healthy lifestyle such as having a healthy diet and being physically active.
Also, this study pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov that has more than 7,000 adult participants found out that those persons who have positive well-being were 47 percent more likely to eat fresh fruit and vegetables compared to their less positive counterparts.
Meanwhile, here are the following ways that can help you to become happier; expressing gratitude, being physically active, having a goodnight's sleep, meditating, and eating a healthier diet.
Always try your best to find good things in every situation that you are facing, it is another way of practicing happiness in life.
