BAGUIO CITY – Only public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus are allowed to ply the city routes.
Aileen Refuerzo, the city's Public Information Office chief, said in an interview on Tuesday the policy aims to protect the riding public against the disease, which remains to be a threat despite the downtrend in cases.
Those considered vaccinated include those who have received the first dose, she said.
Cargo vehicles of essential and non-essential goods are not included and will continue to be afforded unhampered passage.
The latest policy is supported by the officials of the local federations of taxi and jeepney associations, Refuerzo said.
Earlier, Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the mass public transport sector must not be left out in the all-around approach, considering that drivers and operators are in high-risk, close contact environments.
Citing a study, Magalong said cases of virus transmission in PUVs are also high, and addressing the problem requires drivers, who are transport front-liners, to get vaccinated for their and their passengers' protection.
In October, the city government opened the drive-through vaccination for those in the transport sector to make their vaccination easy. (PNA)
