During the holidays, all good intentions of trying to keep your health and nutrition on track is a lot easier said than done, especially when there is a feast of food.
So, it's been weeks after the holidays. And you're surfing the web for ways to get rid of – or at least minimize – what seems like a balloon in your belly. Maybe you are standing on bathroom scale wondering how the heck you gained a monstrous ten pounds and more importantly how you are going to get rid of holiday fat.
The good news is that getting rid of holiday fat is usually relatively easy. Here are five ways to lose weight after the holidays.
Stop with holiday leftovers
The first healthy step to getting rid of holiday fat is to stop snacking on what got them there in the first place. I know you don't want to waste food when there are hundreds of starving children in the world but stuffing your face is not going to fix their hunger. Pack the leftovers, take them to work and let your friends or colleagues gain some weight.
Cut out the sweet stuff
Research shows that sugar intake can be addicting and can lead to an unhealthy cycle of cravings and binges. With those many holiday parties ending in sugar cookies and other sweets, 'tis the season of high levels of sugar and fat! After your last holiday dinner, make a vow to eliminate all desserts for four to ten days. Although it wont be easy, this amount of time will cause any cravings that your body has begun to experience to be relinquished. While cravings decrease, your body will begin to prefer naturally sweet foods, including fruit and vegetables.
Start eating healthy and stay committed to it
Not too many people know this but 80% of weight loss is in diet control. So find a diet that works for you and stick to it. Rather than using a detailed meal plan, simply setting eating rules for yourself like no desserts and no junk food can work wonders.
Start an exercise routine
You don't need to join a gym to start exercising, nor do you need to find a squash buddy. Just wake up 30 minutes earlier than usual, slip on your trainers and head out for a brisk walk. I know hordes of people who lost 8 to 10 pounds a month just by walking 30 minutes a day.
Up your protein
Let's do something we all love. Up the protein! Research suggests that protein prolongs the feeling of fullness. The reason: it is more difficult to digest, leading to less of an insulin spike, and protein containing foods are bulkier. Instead of eating carbohydrates, people who eat a high-protein breakfast or lunch are often less hungry at their next meal. Protein also requires your body to burn a few more calories to digest it.
Remember that your body will naturally detox itself over time. You don't need to embark on a days-long fast or cleanse to rid yourself of holiday bloat. However, there are some things you can do to expedite the process and help your body shed the excess fats you gained. So get up, and do something to get rid of that fats! (FCSC)
