The president of Turkmenistan has ordered the permanent closure of the infamous "Gates of Hell".
According to a report from Agence France-Presse (AFP), President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has asked officials to "find a solution to extinguish the fire," that has been burning for five decades now.
The Darvaza Crater, popularly known as the "Gates of Hell", was the result of the Soviet gas drilling operation back in 1971. Reports say that Soviet geologists decided to lit the crater on fire to prevent natural gas from spreading with the idea that the flames will be extinguished in only a short period of time.
Despite it being a tourist attraction, Berdymukhamedov cited negative health effects and environmental damages as some of the reasons for closing the flaming crater.
State-run newspaper, Neytralny Turkmenistan, also reported that Berdymukhamedov has "instructed to gather scientists, and if necessary, to attract foreign consultants and find a solution for extinguishing the fire."
In 2010 Berdymukhamedov also ordered the quenching of the Gates of Hell, however, efforts were unsuccessful. As of the moment, there is no known target deadline to extinguish the crater. (FDE)
